Judith Sowder is a Professor Emerita of Mathematics and Statistics at San Diego State University. She is a past editor of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and a past member of the NCTM Board of Directors. In 2000 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from NCTM. Judith has published research in many journals, books edited by others and books she edited or wrote, primarily dealing with children’s development of number sense, and the instructional effects of teachers’ mathematical knowledge at the elementary and middle school level. Her most recent is a chapter on “The Mathematical Education and Development of Teachers” published in the Second Handbook of Research in Mathematics Education, edited by F. Lester, and published in 2007 by NCTM and InfoAge. Judith was the primary author of the middle grades content chapter of the recent CBMS document The Mathematical Education of Teachers.

Judith served on the steering committee for the International Group for Psychology in Mathematics Education from 1992-1996. She has received funding for several research projects from the National Science Foundation and the U. S. Department of Education and funding from Qualcomm to develop, with Nadine Bezuk, a Professional Development Collaborative. She is also a past director of the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education.

Judith continues consulting work on many projects, and she is presently working, with Larry Sowder and Susan Nickerson, on the publication of mathematics curriculum materials for teachers, Reconceptualizing Mathematics, to be published by W. H. Freeman.

In January 2012 a conference with invited guests locally and from around the country was held at CRMSE as a tribute to Judith's career.
